Fundraising at Sir Graham Balfour School

Sports Relief

Sir Graham Balfour School has been organising lots of activities for charity over the last few weeks. Our efforts kicked off with a campaign on Friday 19th March for Sports Relief which raised over £1000.

The whole school was asked to come in wearing something red and sporty and contribute £1 on entry. Other activities on the day included a ‘Guess how many Sweets in the Jar’ competition and a raffle for the chance to win a Sports Relief Beckham T-shirt.

The staff also took part in a Mini Sports Day over their lunch hour carrying on the sporty theme. Each House picked a team to represent them in a challenging range of events including an obstacle course, egg and spoon, three legged and wheelbarrow race. Students paid 20p to watch their teachers and cheer on their House. Sandon came out on top in nearly every race winning the overall prize of 1000 House Points thanks to a great effort by there all male elite team!

Mrs Hartley, Assistant Head Teacher explained, “There was a fantastic atmosphere in school throughout the day. It was lovely to see students supporting the cause by dressing up and contributing. The participation from the staff was also brilliant it really topped off the day.”

Are you handy with a camera?

The county council's Transport Policy Unit is running a photographic competition called `Snap the Web' for Staffordshire children in school years 5 to 11.

Children are being invited to send in photos which illustrate how transport in the county affects their lives.
Their photo can be serious or funny, beautiful or edgy, colourful or drab, we really don't mind.  All we ask is that it tells us a little about how they get around in Staffordshire.

The two winning photographers will scoop a £75 prize and two runners up will be awarded £50 each. Winners will be chosen from two categories: children in school years 5 to 9 and from years 10 and 11.

To take part parents and carers will need to register their children by Wednesday 23rd June. Registration forms have been sent out to all schools.
To find out more contact Miss Ashton or Katrina Jones on 01785 277690 or visit  -

School Mock Election
On Thursday May 6th 2010, a General Election was held in Britain. In terms of Citizenship Education, this was too good an opportunity for us to miss! Consequently, we replicated the experience for our students by holding a Mock General Election to coincide with the actual event.

Our aims were to;

- Ensure the students understood fully the democratic process as it exists in GB.
- Ensure the students were aware of significant contemporary political issues.
- Educate them about the policies of the three main political parties.
- Combat the political apathy which exists amongst many of our young people.

There were several age-related constituencies. Each party fielded candidates in all constituencies. Debates were held on a range of relevant issues e.g. education, the environment, the economy, foreign policy etc.

Students were encouraged to campaign actively e.g. by producing posters, holding rallies, issuing leaflets etc. During the campaign, students were permitted to wear rosettes, party insignia and anything appropriate or reasonable.

Tuesday 4th May 2010

Three Stafford Members of Parliament visited to take part in a "Question Time" style debate.
BBC Midlands Today and BBC Radio Stoke interviewed students who took part.
